FMQ Challenge - May

This month is Leah Day month!
I really like her job, I have two of her books and a dvd and she is a very talented teacher!
I found out about Leah some years ago, during a web-surfing in a boring afternoon and I was immediately hooked!
I urge you to go to SewCalGal and give a try to this beautiful challenge (and a possibility to win beautiful prizes, too) and to go to Leah Day to discover Free Motion Quilting her way!
This month challenge was to try a couple of foundational designs: Double Stippling and Railroad Tracks.
Here the beginning of Double Stippling:

And the second part:
E la seconda parte:

Some problem... occasional points instead of smooth and gracious curves:

...but all in all I'm satisfied!
Ma tutto sommato sono soddisfatta!

Oh, and don't forget Railroad Tracks!
First wobbly line (not so much of a line, to tell the truth...)

And my tracks:
Ed il pezzo finito:

Here you can find a lot of inspiration!
Qui trovate ispirazione!

Thank you Leah, you rock!
Grazie Leah, sei una forza!

FMQ Challenge 2012 - April

Hello everybody!
It is the last day of April, just in time for the FMQ Challenge. This month is a Mr April!
Don Linn has been our teacher for this month, sharing his way to create and trace quilting patterns on quilts.
This method involves quite a lot of work before the actual quilting and I have to say that I found out it is not my method of choice, at this point of my fmq-journey, but it is nice have more arrows for our bow, thank you very much, Don!
You can see at SewCalGal a lot of people who try this method, and some patterns are really beautiful!
Finally, I rip out all the quilting in my second sampler and decided to use this sampler to try my hand with the FMQ.

Ciao a tutti!

So here my April FMQ Challenge. The design, traced on mesh and streched on a loop:

SunBonnet Sue

Some years ago, the daughter of a friend of mine gave me a book about SunBonnet Sue as a Christmas present. I don't do a lot of applique... but my mother-in-law asked a cake-carrier as Easter-gift and I thought that Sue was just the perfect decoration for the task, and she is: she is so fresh and lovely! Here two season: Summer and Fall:

Ecco qua 2 stagioni: l'Estate e l'Autunno:

By the way, the cake-carrier is lovely and very very useful (yes, I obviously kept one: Summer for my mother-in-law, Spring for my mum and Fall for me!) :-)

Color Palette Challenge - March

Well, Color Palette Challenge of March is a secret project, so I can just show you fabric choices... the reveal day will be somewhere in Summer ;-)
Not very useful, I know... All in all it has been not so difficult as I feared...

And this is the Color Palette Challenge for April:

Ed ecco la nostra palette per Aprile:

Mmmmh... strange, isn'it?

Mmmmh, "particolare", non trovate?

Shopping Time!

It's almost Spring... it's shopping time (oh, well, I don't know when it is not ;-) )!
My patch-friend and I bought some beautiful fabrics:

My choices:

Bottom left 4 1/2 yardes of Always Blooming by Hoffman Fabrics... I see a Kaleidoscope quilt coming :-)

2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge - March

At SewCalGal it's time for a new challenge and this month we're having the honor and the pleasure of a tutorial by Ann Fahl: her words are very inspiring!
I has been hooked by a photo in the lesson showing her sketchbook: it was so similar to the doodles I used to draw during lessons at the University! It was a deja-vu, my personal madeleine!
It was Sunday morning and I was short of batting... but I had to stitch! So I scrape the proverbial bottom of the basket and create a Franken-batting:

Alas, I have no more my notebooks, but I have the picture in Ann tutorial! So I draw my copy of her doodle and marked it on a black sandwich:

And after that it was just plain fun!!!
I used almost all the kind of thread I have, well, at least all my decorative threads.

E dopo è stato puro divertimento!
Ho usato quasi tutti i miei fili, o perlomeno tutti i miei fili decorativi.

The Metallic Madeira 40 needs a embroidery needle 75/11, tension 2, bobbinfil in the bobbin;
The Rayons, both Madeira and Sulky, can go smoothly on my Horizon with a Universal 70/10, tension auto and a bobbinfil or a Coats Overlock;
Same for the Polyneon, my favourite: easy to stitch, wonderful the almost tridimensional effect of the transition of colors;
I stitched the Monofil Madeira 60 (a monofilament) with a Microtex 60/8, tension 2, same thread in the bobbin;
So far no problems (occasional breakage in rayon and metallic, not a problem with the Polyneon and the monofilament)... but then I tried the Cotona Madeira 30 (100% cotton)... and I experimented continuous breaking of the thread: I changed all I could think of: needle, tension, bobbin thread... At last I managed to reduce the problem with a Topstitch 90/14 needle, tension 2 and Coats Overlock in the bobbin. It is an old threads, bought some years ago, perhaps it is too old and frail? Mah!

Il Metallic Madeira ha bisogno di un ago da ricamo 75/11, tensione a 2 e bobbinfil nella spoletta;
I Rayon, sia il Madeira che il Sulky, vanno lisci sulla mia Horizon con un ago universale 70/10, tensione automatica e in spoletta o del bobbinfil o del Coats Overlock (un filo da tagliaecuci);
Stessa cosa per il Polyneon, che è stato il mio preferito: facile da cucire e meraviglioso l'effetto quasi tridimensionale del passaggio di colori;
Il filo trasparente Monofil Madeira 60 l'ho cucito usando un Microtec 60, tensione abbassata a 2 e lo stesso filo in spoletta;
Mah!

Design Wall Monday... on Tuesday!

Pant pant pant! I'm late for the Design Wall Monday (here other Design Wall Mondays), but yesterday has been a frantic day!
Frantic, but supremely satisfing, because it was my birthday and I received, among other things,  some beautiful things! My collegues (well, more friends than simply collegues!!!) gave me a selection of rainbow threads (polyneon Madeira 40, up in the pic) and my patch-friend Marina some beautiful fabrics, more threads (Rayon 40 Madeira), a batch of funny buttons in cat-shape, a panel of fresh, modern-style labels and a wonderful camera-case, home-made, of course!
Thank you ladies, I'm very very happy with your choices!!! :)

Color Palette Challenge

Here we are, a little bit late, but at last I managed to finish the binding (thank you Leyla and Annie for the course!), right now "Country Lane Tablerunner" is in the washing machine (to get rid of the washable markers, hopefully) and then it will take residence on my kitchen table!
With this project I killed two birds with a stone: the Color Palette Challenge of February (here the beautiful works of talented quilters all around the world AND the color choices for March) and a project from volume one of Quilter's Academy... I love the books of Harriet Hargrave, have I already said she's my "Quilter's of the Year 2012"? She's a very talented writer, her words are very inspiring!
So here there's my work for the Color Palette Challenge of February:

Thank you very much Judy for hosting and thank you very much Vicky for the challenge you provide every month: it is so interesting to prove my hand with colors I'm not confortable with /I don't mix usually!

UPDATE! Top washed... waiting for a good sun-drying (in Italy we're not so used to machine-dryer, you know...):

AGGIORNAMENTO: top lavato e in attesa di asciugarsi:

And this is the Color Palette Challenge of March:

What do you think? They're very bold for my usual taste, I'm a "forest-girl", if my stash says something about my color preference. Well, I think this month challenge will be interesting!

Design Wall Monday

Not so much... but I managed to attach the borders and almost finish the quilting on the "Country Lane" table runner... Ah, and two more Farmer's Wife blocks, you can see them top left in the pic.
If truth must be told, the last one is bigger than 6", I somewhat managed to mess up with the measurement... oh, that's so me :)
More Design Wall Mondeys, as usual, at Patchwork Times!

Cold Winter... again!

Umpfh! I've got a flu, is it possible?! Two in a month!! How annoying!
So I'm late with a lot of things, but perhaps this week-end I will be able to spare some time for my beloved sewing machine... In the meantime Salem, our cat, keeps warm my chair :)
Uffa!

Design Wall

Some Mondays my design wall is, well, just plain dull: no new projects and no old projects, too... but not today, today is quite a mess, see for yourself:

- Up left the first four blocks of The Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt (yep, I learned nothing from the flop of the Dear Jane Project...);

- Alto a sinistra i primi 4 blocchi del The Farmer's Wife (eh sì, il flop del Dear Jane non mi ha insegnato niente...);

- the black block is the feather for the FMQ Challenge;
- the table runner is the project for the Color Palette Challenge;

- il blocco nero è la piuma per il FMQ Challenge;
- il centrotavola è il progetto per il Color Palette Challenge di febbraio;

- the red-blue-white is the Patchwork Caffé Round Robin 2009, for the UFO Challenge;
- the green/white smaller quilt, over the Round Robin, is a sampler from Quilter's Academy...

- il quilt rosso-blu-bianco è il Round Robin 2009 di Patchwork Caffé, per l'UFO Challenge (finalmente lo quilto!);

- uh, and the improv block up right is a sample from Quilters Playtime...

Many others Design Wall Mondays at Patchwork Times!

2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge - February

FMQ February Challenge is directed by Diane Gaudynski, THE Diane Gaudynski!
I learned first about her from Heirloom Machine Quilting by Harriet Hargrave... Harriet is my new "quilter-of-the-year"... last year has been Leah Day year. They're awesome, and I love different approaches: you learn so much more if you try different, and sometimes contrasting, things!
By the way, bach to the challenge!
I saw the work of Diane in Harriet's book and thought: "This woman is magic!". Living in Italy it is not easy to have a class with some big name in the quilting world (I can't say to my husband: "See you dear, I'm going in Paducah for a workshop, don't wait for me at dinner!"), so this challenge is such an occasion! Thank you SewCalGal!
But don't get me wrong, we have awesome quilters in Italy, for example, for the FMQ, Claudia Belluzzi: her work is wonderful and she is such a talented teacher!
Back on track...
I saw Diane's feathers, click my mouth shut (I was gaping in awe, of course), read dutifully her tutorial, thought "I can't do it, I simply can't..." and started to quilt :)

The result is... well... quite horrible, if truth must be told... not the plume per se, it is my first attempt, I'm quite satisfied... but the background... oh my dear, the background is a mess, unforgivable... it is about high time I start some serious echo quilting!

Torniamo a noi... (oggi divago continuamente!!!)

Color Palette Challenge 2012

Here's the palette Vicky chooses for this month:

And this is my choice of fabrics:

Ed ecco la mia scelta di stoffe:

I have already started a project... as usual I try for 2 birds with a stone: a table runner from Quilters Academy n°1 by Carrie and Harriet Hargrave...
I realized last year (well, just a couple of months ago...) that my piecing was sloppy, and so I took matters in hand, bought the Quilters Academy Series and began to work from the beginning. I'm very happy, because it was time for a refresh and the books are beautiful and useful and the projects interesting even for a not-so-absolutely beginner.

Cold Winter!

I've got a cold!
I has been "stranded" between bed and couch all week, but it seems now I'm going better... at last!

Here I am, coming back from Cervia and the Quilting WeekEnd of Quiltitalia (our national guild). We all had some difficult moments and some wonderful ones. I found old and new friends... Now we have a new President and a new board. It is too soon to know where we will go, but the very important thing is that we can fight and bicker, but at last, we all love patchwork and this unify us.

Color Palette Challenge - Done!

Here we are, with the Color Palette Challenge of January:

I think I has not been very "daring" with this one, but I was afraid I didn't have enough time this month to do all my duties. I have a retreat, starting tomorrow (I can't wait!!!), and usually I come home with my head full of projects and new techniques I want to try and never-ever enough time to do it!!! So I thought it was better starting with a little project, but actually made it! :)

2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge - January

Hello everybody!
This year I am really really serious in trying to improve my FMQ-skills!
I signed up both for The Wednesday Quilt-Along with Leah Day and this FMQ Challenge, hosted at SewCalGal. To me 2012 will be the FMQ-year!
I completed the January tutorial, doing something very small, just a quick sampler with the threads I use in my quilts:

So the red thread is Rayon 40 Madeira, the multicolor one is Cotona 30 Madeira, the white on your left is polyneon Madeira, the last one (it seems white, but it is really a very light green) is Gutermann polyester.
Bobbinfil in the bobbin and a Universal 70/10 needle.

Rayon and Polyneon both stitches beautifully: no need to adjust tension.
Polyester seems "stiff" and rigid and does not curve smoothly.
Cotona was a nightmare, but it was my fault: I decided to try with the same needle, bobbin and tension and this has been a mistake: Cotona needed definitely a different needle and some trial-and-error in the tension department!

Quilt Along Wednesday #1

Ta-daaa! It seems I managed to did all my homework, so far, this month!
I'm busy tearing away the quilting in my Second Course Sampler (that's my UFO Challenge number 5), I'm a good point with my Color Palette Challenge of January and I did the exercises for the first Wednesday of this Quilt-A-Long, hosted by Leah Day. Next will be the 2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge, but I definitely think I can manage (so far...)
So here's my production... ok, not so much of it, but it is a start!

 Here is a close-up, I'm very proud of me: I used to think that stippling was not my piece of cake, because I'm a sort of "control-freak" somewhat and this smooth transition of forms that freeely blend together was too anarchy for my tastes... well, I think things are changing!

Let's go to Free Motion Quilting Project to see all the Quilt-Along Wednesdays

Orme sulla Spiaggia - Footprints on the Beach

I called this little quilt (25 1/2 " square) Footprints on the Beach, I made it following the "Musical Chair" play from Quilter's Playtime by Dianne Hire. I set the improv nine patch on-point and quilted with a simple stippling (never miss a good session of FMQ practice!):

Design Wall Monday

Here we are! Another Design Wall Monday...

There's not very much to see, really: just one top, but completely quilted and couched, and 4 black squares with my quilting exercises: I want to try all (or most...) the designs in "From Daisy to Paisley" by Leah Day: she is such a talented quilter!
For more Design Wall Mondays, as usual, there is Patchwork Times!

Color Palette Challenge - January

So it begins!
This is the January palette, choose by the talented Vicky Welsh of Field Trips in Fiber:

We can do whatever pop up in our mind (king size quilts, bags, wall hangings, table runners, pincushions,.. you name it!), and I choose this fabrics from my stash:

I think I will go small, for this first month, just a warm-up... :)
